A third, aimed at enlisting African-American churches in combatting HIV and AIDS, has trained more than 500 religious leaders.'We're in the middle of defining the terms of our interdependence in a world where so much of our identity is caught up in our differences,' Bill Clinton said. 'So our job, as citizens - those of us who have no political power - is to do what we can to build up the positive forces of our interdependence and reduce the negative ones.'Share the piece on TWITTER: https://twitter.com/ClintonGlobal/status/648262266396254208To date, members of the CGI community have made more than 3,200 Commitments to Action which have improved the lives of over 430 million people in more than 180 countries.CGI's 11th Annual Meeting will brings together than 1,000 of the most effective leaders from philanthropy, business, government, and civil society will assemble at this year's meeting. In a piece posted on FOX Business, Bob Harrison, CEO of GGI, explained how companies continue to support CGI and life-changing commitments around the world:'Despite our mission, some have characterized the turnover of a handful of CGI's sponsors as 'trouble' for CGI and 'abandoning' the Clintons, but this is just another example of critics trying to politicize philanthropy, and the facts don't bear out the argument.'At CGI, corporations not only provide funding, but also apply their expertise in management, technology, manufacturing, distribution and research to help non-governmental organizations and foundations be more effective. These corporate commitments are providing better access to education and healthcare in the developing world, creating jobs and improving infrastructure in the U.S, and protecting the environment.'Share the piece on TWITTER: https://twitter.com/ClintonGlobal/status/646441578366672896Share the piece on FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/clintonglobalinitiative/posts/10153246430420318This is one of our strongest line-ups ever for a CGI Annual Meeting:President Clinton and Chelsea Clinton will be joined by leaders such Newly re-elected Prime Minister Tsipras of Greece; His Majesty King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan; Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, President, Republic of Liberia; Petro Poroshenko, President of Ukraine; Matteo Renzi, Prime Minister of the Italian Republic; Sir Richard Branson, Founder, Virgin Group and Virgin Unite; Ursula Burns, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Xerox Corporation; John Chambers, Executive Chairman of the Board, Cisco; Bill Gates, Co-chair and Trustee, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; Anita Goel, Chairman and CEO, Nanobiosym Diagnostics; Elizabeth Holmes, Founder and CEO, Theranos; Michel Liès,Group CEO, Swiss Reinsurance Company; Jack Ma, Executive Chairman, Alibaba Group; John McFarlane, Chairman, Barclays; Carolyn Miles, President and CEO, Save the Children; Jacqueline Novogratz, Founder and CEO, Acumen; Art Peck, Chief Executive Officer, Gap Inc.; Paul Polman, Chief Executive Officer, Unilever; Sheikha Lubna bint Khalid Al Qasimi, Minister of Foreign Trade, United Arab Emirates; Megan Smith, Chief Technology Officer of the United States; George Soros,Founder and Chairman, Soros Fund Management and Open Society Foundations; and Jim Yong Kim, President, World Bank Group, Charlize Theron, Neil Degrasse Tyson among the 1000 participants.Read our recent press release to see a more comprehensive list of participants and attendees.Coinciding with the United Nations' new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), members of the CGI community will explore how to take action on timely issues such as climate change, women's equality, and global health at this pivotal time in philanthropy and international development. In the past year alone, CGI members have worked together to respond to and address a wide range of critical issues from the Ebola outbreak in West Africa and the Syrian refugee crisis to improving infrastructure and spurring youth employment through social enterprise in the United States, among others.OTHER RECENT PRESSClinton Foundation looks to the futureDevex published a piece that gives an overview of the diverse work that Clinton Foundation initiatives are doing all over the world.'Since Hillary Clinton left to pursue the presidency, the foundation has been thrust into the spotlight not for the impact of its programs, but for questions surrounding foreign donations, conflicts of interest, and internal politics. What has received less attention are the foundation's programs, and the professionals who lead them insist they are hard at work and won't be slowed down by an election in which the foundation itself has become an issue. The Clinton Foundation, a public charity, is a direct service provider, rather than a foundation in the traditional sense.Share the piece on TWITTER: https://twitter.com/ClintonFdn/status/648183654225735680.Share the piece on FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/ClintonFoundation/posts/855970657857710.Voice your vision for the #FutureofImpactThis year, CGI is teaming up with GOOD Magazine for a campaign encouraging people around the world to digitally participate in the Annual Meeting. But that's what'll happen September 26-29, when the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) holds its 11th Annual Meeting. This year, CGI wants you to tell these world leaders what to do. No, really.'Share the piece on TWITTER: https://twitter.com/ClintonGlobal/status/646441578366672896Share the piece on FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/clintonglobalinitiative/posts/10153244086290318Virtual reality will take Annual Meeting attendees on a trip to AfricaWe're excited to unveil a virtual reality film, 'Inside Impact: East Africa,' during the opening session of the CGI Annual Meeting. The seven-minute film allows people around the world to join President Clinton and Chelsea Clinton on their trip to East Africa in spring 2015 - and see first-hand how Commitments to Action made by CGI members are changing lives and empowering communities.· Associated Press: Bill Clinton appears in virtual-reality movie on Africa· Fast Company: Bill Clinton Is the First U.S. President in Virtual Reality'The ability of technology like this to bring people together from around the world has the potential to encourage everyone, no matter where they are, to be more engaged in global issues and how to solve them,' Clinton said in a statement to The Associated Press. 'I enjoyed being able to bring the viewer with me to see the important work being done on the ground in Africa. I hope everyone who watches the film will feel compelled to make a positive difference in their own way.'Clinton Development Initiative's unique strategies address U.N. SDG 2The Clinton Development Initiative's Malawi County Director Keith Polo penned a piece for Devex that explains how we're bringing together the nonprofit, government, and private sectors to develop agricultural value chains in East Africa, helping to address Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2: 'End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture.'The Clinton Development Initiative's approach to overcoming these challenges is the Anchor Farm model. We blend strategies and financing from both the development and the private sectors, operating agribusinesses alongside smallholder farmer outreach. As the country director of CDI, an initiative of the Clinton Foundation, in Malawi, I am excited to say we have been successful in helping 85,000 farmers in Malawi, Rwanda, and Tanzania benefit from climate-smart agronomic training, higher yields, and increased market access.Share the piece on TWITTER: https://twitter.com/ClintonFdn/status/647138498663817218Share the piece on FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/ClintonFoundation/posts/854801234641319The Clinton Foundation and CGI 'Go Local' in HaitiDevex explained how 'to find success in Haiti's recovery, go local.' Devex joined us in our 2015 trip to Haiti, and they saw firsthand how partnerships can drive progress. In the article, they explain how the Foundation's work in Haiti 'supports small and medium enterprises in ways that reduce, not grow, their dependence on external support.' Devex also wrote about CGI's Haiti Action Network and how several CGI commitment-makers like TOMS and West Elm are helping to encourage sustainable economic development in Haiti.'The Clinton foundation is uniquely placed. We are able to be the great convener because we have President Clinton,' she said, elaborating on how the Clinton Foundation gathers stakeholders to support its focus areas in Haiti: building capacity, bringing in investment, and empowering women entrepreneurs. 'Just as we assessed ourselves and knew that disaster relief was not our forte, each individual organization should do an assessment of themselves and ask what are our strengths?'Share the piece on TWITTER: https://twitter.com/ClintonFdn/status/645964469324095488Share the piece on FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/ClintonFoundation/posts/853266764794766CGI Commitment brings quality-ensured medicines to AfricaReema Jweied-Guegel, vice president of the U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention, wrote in Devex about how her organization is working with CGI and partners to ensure quality-ensured medicines are available in Africa and around the world. She writes how 'Quality assured medicines are a pillar of public health and one underlying fundamental tenant, or inherent promise that they provide, is that they will be safe, of good quality and effective.'We are working with the Clinton Global Initiative and other partners to help strengthen health systems in Africa and eliminate poor quality medicines from the region's drug supply. In 2013, we opened the Center for Pharmaceutical Advancement in Training in Ghana and made it our first commitment to action as members of the Clinton Global Initiative, where we are now addressing the unique challenges of ensuring pharmaceutical quality in sub-Saharan Africa.'Share the piece on TWITTER: https://twitter.com/ClintonFdn/status/647071757074104320Moringa: the new kale? There is a new superfood on the market: moringa. According to some analyses, 'moringa leaves have double the protein in yogurt, four times more calcium than milk, and seven times more vitamin C than oranges.' As discussed in an NPR story, Kuli Kuli Foods, which sells moringa products in the U.S., is partnering with the Clinton Foundation and the Smallholder Farmers Alliance to support smallholder women farmers in Haiti, where they will cultivate moringa. This partnership - and a new CGI commitment - will be highlighted during the 2015 Annual Meeting. The company recently announced a partnership with the Clinton Foundation to launch a similar program in Haiti. Eventually, Curtis envisions relationships with farmers around the world. On the fulfillment and shipping side in the U.S., autistic adults do much of the work.Share the piece on TWITTER: https://twitter.com/ClintonFdn/status/647024940529618944President Clinton and the center groundFareed Zakaria, who will be moderating a CGI Conversation on advancing growth in Europe during the Annual Meeting, authored a CNN piece on the importance of moderation and President Clinton's legacy. The extremes make noise, but look who is governing countries -- Germany's Angela Merkel, Italy's Matteo Renzi. Even the leftist Francois Hollande in France has backtracked on much of his leftism. Former U.S. President Bill Clinton's strategy is still the right one in a post-Cold War, postsocialist world -- the most serious place in politics remains the center ground.
