If you don't trust edgesuite.net, don't install anything from any of Apple's various app stores: Mac App Store, iOS App Store, etc. Don't even install any operating system updates. They have pretty much all been served up by the edgesuite.net CDN domain for well over a decade. MacBook users have long known the legendary Toast Titanium program. Starting with Mac OS 9, there was no better program for burning discs, over the years of its existence, the title of the best program for mounting discs remains the same for Mac OS X. But since that time, Toast has become a powerful tool and has acquired new features.

Just for reference, this was available since at least 10.2.

The new thing about this is that we're talking about Disk Utility, not Disk Copy. Disk Copy is no longer in Panther and its functionality has been put into Disk Utility. Thus, this is a new hint and not a repeat of a previous feature.
I've noticed that Disk Utility won't recognize .toast files directly, the way Disk Copy did. I'd rather convert the image without mounting it, personally.

Update: I noticed that if I changed the .toast extension to .iso, Disk Utility will allow me to convert it without mounting it first, which is the preferred way to go about that.

What happens in 10.3 to AppleScripts that send events (when made in 10.2) to Disk Copy? Scan loading mac os. Are they forwarded on to Disk Utility? Of course, one could just rewrite the script to do the work using the command line (do shell) utilities (disktool, hdiutil, diskutil), but there might still be a need for interfacing with the GUI utility I suppose.

Has anyone used the older Disc Copy from say, 10.2.x in panther? https://slotsdirectcasinopalace100codessunbonusnomadeposit.peatix.com. I miss it as a stand alone and found it rather awkward just to make some img for server deployment (Using Disc Utility, then makinga new image, giving it a size, .)
Before it was just drag and img.

This works for 10.5.6 Mac. Get your toast file, and open it with disk utility. Select the toast file at the left, and then click convert at the top, and have it end with .dmg. It works like a charm, but it may take awhile if it is a large file. It took my 5 gig .toast file about 4-5 minutes to convert it.

Anybody still out there? I'm having a problem with a .toast file-i've tried changing the extension, then converting it in Disk Utility. Every time I try, however, it says 'Unable to create '_____.dmg' (not recognized)'.
Anybody got advice?

The Virtual CD/DVD-ROM Utility is a tool to aid mounting a CD/DVD ROM image file onto the desktop of a classic Mac OS. - The kind of image file types it can mount, may be .CDR, .DSK, .IMG (Disk Copy 6 .ISO compatible), .ISO, .TOAST, etc.

• Any Macintosh physically or theoretically capable of mounting and reading CD-ROM media etc. This includes Macintosh clones and emulators, 68k and PPC.
• Macintosh OS from System Software 7.0 to Mac OS 9.2.2
• Macintosh CD/DVD Drivers (these are usually installed as Extensions by the System). If running Mac OS's prior to 7.5 you may need to locate these drivers and install them yourself:
  • Apple CD Driver (or Apple CD/DVD Driver as installed by later OS's)
  • Audio CD Access
  • Foreign File Access
  • ISO 9660 File Access

Limitations:

• To create or use images greater than 2GB you need an HFS+ volume and Mac OS 9.x, otherwise System 7.x to Mac OS 8.x is OK
  
• This software can successfully create images from Hybrid Mac/Win media. It requires first the Windows partition of the CD to be mounted. To do this you need to use the 'Joliet Volume Access Control Panel to swap the mounted CD's Mac partition to the Windows part, before ripping. It can also mount hybrid CD image files.
  • Note: It however, cannot create or mount mixed data/music, bin/cue images.
• Some image files are not CD/DVD .ISO compatible and will not mount onto a desktop using the Virtual DVD-ROM/CD Utility. Such as; compressed image files, for example: Disk Copy 6.x compressed images, or Mac OS X .dmg files, etc. An error message you might get if the Utility fails to mount an image file, is: 'There are insufficient system resources to mount this image'.

• The included 'Virtual CD AutoTyper' may not recognize files dropped onto its icon initially and doesn't appear to work. If so, then you need to Rebuild the Mac's Desktop Database to fix this issue.
